Leclerc announced last week a fixed price of €0.29 for a baguette, the French daily bread. Bakers, millers, grain growers and the French farmers’ union FNSEA reacted indignantly because someone has to pay the low prices. If the consumer does not pay the supermarket a fair price, the chain will have to bleed for the supermarket and they think that is unjustified.

Low prices in expensive times, according to the suppliers at the front of the chain, that is not possible at all.

If the price of electricity rises, everyone thinks that the state should intervene (…) but if a private company fixes the prices, it should not

According to the Insee, The national institute of statistics and economic studies (French CBS) a baguette should cost on average €0.90. Of that amount, 15% would be for the account of the flour, 30 to 40% in personnel costs, 10 to 15% fixed costs and 30 to 45% margin. The only way supermarkets could live up to such a low price would be to use lower quality flour. Shame, and that for a product that France has nominated to UNESCO as intangible heritage.

According to Michel-Édouard Leclerc, he is lowering the price precisely to support the purchasing power of the average French consumer. “We have a mountain of inflation coming our way,” say Leclerc in the Huffington Post. In view of this, the chain wanted to give a strong sign of its intention not to pass on price increases to consumers without discussion or without moderation. The basic baguette, which Leclerc already had in the shop for €0.30 and of which millions are sold, takes into account two previous price increases that the millers implemented and the preconditions of the loi Egalim (the law to prevent farmers to guarantee a fair price) and is therefore a perfect interpretation of such a ‘sign’.

But what Leclerc thinks is even more important is that business is taking action in these times of inflation. He is therefore surprised at the criticism that he finds based on fallacies. “When the price of electricity goes up, everyone thinks the state should intervene (…) but if a private company fixes prices, they can’t. It’s a stupid controversy, our consumers don’t see it that way.” Leclerc also plans to freeze the prices of other commodities and simply calls the criticism of his policy ‘moronic’. His supermarket positions itself as the Robin Hood of consumers in difficult times.

For the Netherlands calculated the National Institute for Budget Information (Nibud) recently found that families have an average of 40 euros less to spend each month as a result of rapidly rising inflation. The declining purchasing power amounts to up to 100 euros for two-income couples with several children. Breadwinners who do not see their wages increase should even take into account a decrease in purchasing power that can amount to more than 200 euros per month. Such powerful declines in purchasing power as in 2021 and 2022 have not occurred for a long time, according to Nibud.

Juan Sebastian Torales arrived at this year’s Ventana Sur Proyecta showcase for Latin American projects as one of the event’s most buzzed up debutants with his upcoming semi-autobiographical feature “Almamula.”

In September, Torales and producer Pilar Peredo, from France’s Tu Vas Voir, pitched the project at San Sebastian’s Co-production Forum, where it won the Eurimages award, opening up the opportunity to present at Ventana Sur. It has since participated in the BrLab writing laboratory in Sao Paulo, which Peredo says went a long way towards refining the script.

Tu Vas Voir’s Edgard Tenembaum and Argentina’s Lorena Quevedo of Twins Latin Films also produce.

“Almamula” starts in Santiago del Estero, Argentina, where 12-year-old Nino is assaulted for being homosexual. In an effort to protect the boy, his parents move the family to a small rural village. Overwhelmed by guilt and shame and facing the scorn of a conservative community, he will do everything he can think of to attract the Almamula: a legendary creature which captures those who commit an impure sexual act.

Torales short film “Sacha” was an initial approach to the story he is developing with his first feature. His initial interest in tracking the 12-year-old protagonist, the atmosphere of rural Northern Argentina, the climate of tension and wilderness signal his search to find the tone that will define “Almamula.”

Torales explained how the story will play in the realms of reality and fantasy to Variety while in Buenos Aires.

“’Almamula’ is both a real and fantastic drama,” he said. “It’s real and palpable because it addresses a universal issue, one of the greatest fears any human can face, which is to be alone. And it’s fantastic because in reality we all need our own fantasies to survive. For me, ‘Almamula’ is proof that we are all part reality and part fantasy, confused all the time. I like to say that ‘Almamula’ is a film with horror aspects as well, which give it a completely original dimension.”

It’s been years since Juan’s childhood in rural Argentina, looking for the Almamula himself, but Peredo explained that his experiences are still as current as ever in the conservative territories.

“The film is born from a personal experience, and everything that happens is directly inspired by Juan’s real-life experience. But of course, it’s also a fictional story in which Juan takes liberties. He still frequently goes back to his home province, Santiago del Estero, and the Almamula is as well-known as ever,” she said.

“Its legend is still alive and hasn’t changed in the years since Juan has grown up,” she continued. “Everyone, both in the city and in the countryside, knows about her and fears her. It doesn’t matter what age, social class or environment people move in.”

According to Peredo, they hope to start filming in the first quarter of 2021. To that end, the producer was in Ventana Sur “to promote the project, continue conversations initiated at San Sebastian with distributors and interested sellers, and evaluate new possibilities of collaboration with other co-producers and partners.

The political crisis is like quicksand: above all, do not get too excited, so as not to get bogged down further. In great difficulty at the end of the first year of his mandate, Joe Biden does not draw any dramatic conclusions. No question of changing teams or orientation. Its immediate objective is simple crisis communication: meeting Americans to convince them of the relevance of its reforms.

Speaking Wednesday, January 19, at a press conference, an exercise that he hardly tastes, the American president appeared more clumsy than combative, without scathing formulas. He even got lost in ambivalent remarks on the Russian threat against Ukraine, which the White House had to clarify in the evening, by press release.

More surprising: Joe Biden pretended to discover the violence of American politics and its incandescent polarization. Eleven months before the mid-term elections, bipartisan preaching is set aside like an old-fashioned habit. The president has chosen to denounce the systematic obstruction of the Republican opposition, highlighting the submission of elected officials from the Grand Old Party (GOP) to Donald Trump.

“Could you ever imagine that a man more in office could intimidate an entire party? », questioned Joe Biden. “What are the Republicans for? », he added, calling on the opposition to take a stand on tax justice or the environment. “Can you name another president who has accomplished as much as I have in a year? » Joe Biden’s frustration is palpable. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic and a tormented international context, Year I of his administration should have satisfied the Democratic ranks. Unemployment fell to 3.9% of the labor force, with 6.4 million jobs created.

In March 2021, the White House successfully pushed through the American Rescue Plan – a $1.9 trillion (1.671 billion) stimulus to respond to the crisis. At the beginning of November 2021, it was the turn of the infrastructure modernization plan, worth 1,200 billion dollars (1,056 billion euros), to overcome the parliamentary obstacle. The cruise has seen better days. Pretty much everyone leading up to June 2, 2019, when the giant of the seas MSC-Opera crashed into a quay in the port of Venice, a collision which seems to have caused a chain reaction. Since then, the industry has suffered many calamities: debates on overtourism, damning pollution studies, citizen demonstrations, Covid-19…

These insults affect the industry which, within an expanding tourism sector, grew the fastest until the pandemic, without the slightest brake. “The regulations are fifteen years late, admits Jean-François Suhas, president of the Club of the cruise of the port of Marseilles, partisan of a reinforcement of the standards. On the social level, globalization, and therefore social dumping, took place fifty years ago. On the environmental level, it is done fifty years later. And virtuous shipowners are not rewarded. »

But the lines are moving, and two decisions illustrate this. First, that taken by the Italian government to remove the large liners from the historic center of Venice, after years of procrastination. Then, further west, the port of Palma de Mallorca has just limited traffic to three liners per day, only one of which carries more than 5,000 passengers.

Quite a symbol, because in the Balearic Islands the cruise industry is at home. She dumped more than 2.6 million passengers in 2019, less than half of them in Palma, Europe’s third-largest cruise port, behind Barcelona and Civitavecchia, near Rome. It took the coalition of around 30 associations of residents of Palma and environmental defenders to invite cruise passengers and local leaders to sit around a table… although the feeling of a missed opportunity dominates despite everything today. In fact, the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), the union of cruise passengers, is doing well: traffic should drop moderately and the agreement provides for twenty exceptional days when the gauge may be exceeded.

“It is neither a positive nor a negative agreement, summarizes Margalida Ramis, spokesperson for the GOB, which coordinates the movement. The political acceptance that limits must be set is a historical fact. But the decision taken is not based on any objective data and the agreement does not provide to impose environmental conditions, which leaves the door open to “greenwashing”. »

“A lack of knowledge”

Palma de Mallorca is not an isolated case. Embodiment of cruise-related overtourism, Dubrovnik, in Croatia, also compromised in 2019 with the CLIA to spread out the passages of liners. The same year, despite warnings from shipowners, the ports of Santorini, Bruges and Dublin limited the number of ships likely to dock simultaneously.

The early seeds of becoming a bird researcher were already sown in the 1970s. My parents exchanged the village of Wormer for farmland in the Kop van Noord-Holland. I was a dreamy little boy who actually wanted to be a farmer. After school I could always be found at the neighbors who have a dairy farm. Black-tailed godwits around the corner, and the cows were still being milked with a mobile milking hut. In addition to black-tailed godwits, you saw turtle doves and partridges everywhere. During rambles in the region, you didn’t look up to the ruffs that silently flew around you. And skylarks everywhere, really everywhere. The number of skylarks was estimated at 750,000 pairs by Sovon Vogelonderzoek Nederland in those years. The term ‘Agricultural Nature Management’ did not yet exist.

Even then, there was already an urgency to support the declining numbers of meadow birds with policy. The Relations Memorandum Policy (1975) from the Den Uyl Cabinet was the first attempt to give the interweaving of nature and farmland a chance. At that time, black-tailed godwit, lapwing and oystercatcher were seen as little critical culture followers. Management agreements were concluded in defined areas. It was a time when the then still fairly objective government guaranteed knowledge gathering and the provinces sent the Provincial Planning Services (PPD) into the field with practical thinking ecologists to collect current data. Independent of course. In fact, meadow bird policy was reactive.

In the early 1990s, we lost the ortolan bunting and gray bunting, and the black-tailed godwit and skylark lines continued to decline. The reactions of the established nature organizations generally showed little ecological sense or knowledge of farming

alarm bells

In subsequent policy cycles, the stacks of reports increased but the number of farmland birds decreased commensurately. On a European scale, the decline of partridges, larks, meadow birds and other beauties continued almost silently.

Alarm bells started ringing in the Netherlands. Among other things, Vogelbescherming Nederland started to stir. The agricultural system, meanwhile, became more and more efficient, and the economic model that created it remained unchanged. With every growth spurt of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), small steps were sometimes taken to improve biodiversity in agricultural areas and then often giant steps back that evaporated small local successes.

In the early 1990s, we lost the ortolan bunting and gray bunting, and the black-tailed godwit and skylark lines continued to decline. The reactions of the established nature organizations generally showed little ecological sense or knowledge of farming. In that period, researchers who were mainly concerned with meadow birds focused their attention mainly on partial aspects of the ecology of – for example – the black-tailed godwit. Farmers who stood out as frontrunners in those years were looked at with pity by their colleagues or, conversely, they were blamed by nature organizations. I’ve known some of these frontrunners for decades. Despite all the good intentions, not much has changed for them personally; their lands have often become quieter and emptier.

At that time, the skylark still happily sang his lyrical tunes, but saw his breeding area shrink. In the late eighties and early nineties, the number of skylarks was estimated at a maximum of 300,000 pairs. The songbird, which also charmed William Shakespeare, was still quite numerous in this period on moors, the blond dunes and, for example, on and around military training grounds and airfields. That meant that skylarks and black-tailed godwits were still very much present in our minds and we were especially concerned about the almost extinct Montagu’s harriers that unexpectedly appeared in the Groningen fields.

Dance around the money pots
In the meantime, money pots became available. Researchers eagerly plunged into it and concentrated their dance for the money around the black-tailed godwit. Broadly speaking, farmers still shrugged their shoulders about the loss of biodiversity. The further intensification on Dutch farms made the mixed farms disappear efficiently. Arable farming, horticulture and dairy farming and other land-based agricultural forms were separated and many animal species associated with the old farmland disappeared almost silently. Think of the barn swallow, the linnet and the ring sparrow. This segregation also continued in European arable land, thanks to a rather energetic but also one-sided CAP.

In the 1990s, the rigid conception of separating the functions ‘nature’ and ‘nature in agricultural areas’ was abandoned. As a result, the budgets for meadow birds continued to swell and landscape restoration was started here and there. The limited scale at which these policy initiatives took place (and still take place) was meaningless for the population level of the vast majority of species. Researchers were mainly concerned with sub-aspects and then (and still do) have virtually no notion of the ecological limits within regular farming practice.

Attention for field birds
At the end of the eighties, attention was also paid to field birds. The work of various PPDs clearly showed that arable regions in, for example, Drenthe, Groningen, Zeeland and even Limburg, turned out to be of great national significance for partridge, skylark, yellow wagtail and yellowhammer. These were also the years when the first articles appeared describing the extinction of Montagu’s harrier, ortolan and red bunting.
The work of the enlightened hunters of the Nature and Environment Conservation Foundation (SBNL) with the partridge as standard-bearer kicked off. The Groningen work on field birds, initiated by the Groningen PPD, was a close second. At the time, it was hardly surprising that a handful of provincial officials stood at the cradle of new policy. In Groningen they certainly did not turn a blind eye to it.

Field bird policy
The Montagu’s Harrier could – as a belated inheritance from Mansholt – be seen as an unexpected windfall and thanks to the attention this graceful species was able to generate at the time, we developed policy on field birds for the first time. In this story a combination of a good press, a progressive CDA deputy, a handful of bold officials from the province of Groningen, the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (at that time, with the regional directorates, an important player), the Rural Areas Agency (DLG) and a handful of volunteers who have been involved with Montagu’s harriers and field birds from the very beginning, a successful combination. It was a mix of idealism, convincing people and an unsatisfied hunger for knowledge, with the idea that special natural values and modern agriculture could go hand in hand.

Meanwhile, the legacy of Mansholt, his European agricultural policy, showed nicely that extensification of arable farming in parts of Groningen and Drenthe had a direct effect on fairly rare species of birds of prey and owls, but the number of skylarks locally skyrocketed. Shakespeare would have been pleased, so would Mansholt. Suddenly a bright light appeared to flicker in the dark tunnel. It must be said that thanks to Deputy Jaap van Dijk the Groningen field birds and in particular the Montagu’s harriers became the white ravens of the national policy on farmland birds. However, the successes remained regional and are unfortunately poorly documented.

Species Policy
In terms of policy, the first cash flows got underway. In 1995 the ‘natural disaster’ package was tested and in 1997 implemented in policy terms. The birth of the national field bird policy took place near Midwolda on the land of farmer Zijlker. The province and DLG had a grip on this policy, where agreements were made at the kitchen tables at farmers’ homes for field birds. Nationally, meanwhile, the number of skylarks continued to decline.

With the expanding budgets for agri-environmental management, the almost romantic atmosphere surrounding the conservation of farmland birds began to give way to the money-driven approach that has now become the standard

The species policy was also created in the 1990s, a gem in national nature policy. In 1999 the Species Protection Plan Montagu’s Harrier saw the light of day in the richly decorated Groningen Statenzaal. This happened in the period when independent researchers and ‘policy’ could still find each other without political pressure and formed the basis for the development of a concept in which field birds and conventional farmers managed to find each other flawlessly.

In the meantime, the number of skylarks – both in agricultural and natural areas – continued to fall sharply and there are no convincing examples nationwide of approaches that make a difference to this species on a reasonable scale. The fact that the species dropped below the 100,000 pair mark speaks volumes.

With the expanding budgets for agri-environmental management, the almost romantic atmosphere surrounding the conservation of farmland birds began to give way to the money-driven approach that has become the standard. Initially, governments still had a grip on the money flows towards goals, but that soon came to an end. After the Groningen deputy Henk Bleker had been able to practice ‘management’ by farmers in Groningen without too much political opposition, DLG and the LNV regional directorates were eliminated ingloriously in his high-profile years as State Secretary and without significant protests. After that, the gate of the dam was closed. I will come back to this in a later contribution.

Looking ahead
In a number of contributions to Foodlog, I will focus on the development of successful policy on field birds in the Netherlands in the early years when policymakers, enthusiasts and farmers began to realize the significance of the declining bird numbers. Knowledge gathering and enthusing farmers and policymakers went hand in hand. The subsequent introduction of increasing budgets for agri-environmental management paved the way for a policy on nature and landscape in agricultural areas that offers hardly any prospects for skylarks and other canaries in the agricultural coal mine.

The number of breeding skylarks has now fallen to less than 40,000 pairs, about the same number as the black-tailed godwit. Money flows have now been institutionalized around agricultural collectives. The development of realistic biodiverse concepts yields little or no result and lingers on showing good intentions and striving for support.

People who want to delve into this matter can read the book by Elvira Werkman (The man on the dike, 2020) or an essay by me (Birds show us the way, 2020), both published by KNNV Publishers.

JAKARTAVicky Prasetyo and Kalina Octaranny is back in the spotlight. The two are reportedly divorced, even though they have not yet been married for 1 year.

The news was revealed by Kalina Octaranny around the end of December 2021. He even admitted that he had separated from his house and did not get a living from the presenter. However, Vicky Prasetyo admitted that he had not divorced the woman he married in March 2021.

Well, to discuss more about the journey of their relationship. Here are the facts as summarized Okayzone, Thursday (20/1/2022).

1. Married

Vicky Prasetyo and Kalina Octarannya were serially married at The Lodge Golf at Jagorawi, Bogor, West Java, on March 13, 2021. Their wedding was broadcast live on Vicky Prasetyo’s YouTube channel.

“Brother Vicky Prasetyo, I will marry you and I will marry you Vicky Prasetyo bin Hermanto to Erie Oktarani Binti Sardie Asairi with a dowry of a set of prayer tools and Rp130,321 paid in cash,” said the head of the village, Hasyim Adnani.

Vicky in a loud voice then replied “I accept the marriage and the marriage of Erie Oktarani bint Sardie Asairi with the dowry paid in cash.”

Their marriage was also held under strict health protocols. Considering the Covid-19 pandemic, which at that time was not over.

2. Marriage is called a setting

Vicky Prasetyi and Kalina Octaranny’s happiness was hit by oblique issues. The two are called only married because of the setting.

This is also without reason, because Vicky Prasetyo’s track record often changes partners and is often called setting marriage.

The news was denied by both. They often share their affection on each other’s Instagram. Kalina Octaranny also admitted that he was not interested in Vikcy Prasetyo until he finally melted because of the good nature of the man who was nicknamed the gladiator.

3. Split Signal

Not even a year into their marriage, Vicky Prasetyo and Kalina Octaranny’s household is said to have cracked. They even hinted at their separation on their respective personal Instagrams.

Like Vicky Prasetyo, who once uploaded a confused sentence on Instagram. He also apologized for all his mistakes because he couldn’t be a good leader. This upload is what triggers the issue of household rifts that often spread on social media.

“Finally all stopped at the age of one year. Sorry for all the mistakes as the captain on this boat trip,” wrote Vicky on Instagram Story.

The farewell signal got stronger when Kalina Ocktaranny uploaded a photo of the two-story house that was supposed to be hers on her Instagram Story. Kalina also said that she would occupy the house in the near future.

The reason is, the house is not too far from the residence of her ex-husband, Deddy Corbuzier. So, he can be close to his only son, Azka Corbuzier.

“Bismillah, give mom a little more time to keep mom’s promise to you, cha. So that I can stay close to you again, Mama’s love,” he continued.

4. Vicky Prasetyo Says Haven’t Dropped Divorce

Vikcy Prasetyo then opened his voice regarding the issue of his divorce with Kalina Octaranny. He admitted that he had not divorced the ex-wife of Deddy Corbuzier.

“From Kalina’s point of view, maybe yes (divorce), if she bids farewell, that’s her right, but from a personal perspective, there is no divorce,” said Vicky on Youtube Seleb Oncam News.

He says indeed the fight between them has been going on for a long time. But Vicky said he was trying to repair the relationship. If it can’t be fixed, he also admits that he will part on good terms.

5. Kalina Octaranny’s anger to the point of not being given alimony

Kalina Octaranny spilled her frustration on Vicky Prasetyo recently. He seemed annoyed after seeing the presenter visiting his mother, even though he thought he had never cared.

Kalina Octaranny also said that Vicky Prasetyo had asked for divorce many times in November 2021. In fact, he even said that he was no longer getting a living from the man he married on March 13, 2021.

“Don’t just corner me everywhere by being nice and wanting to defend. When in fact there is no income,” said Kalina Octaranny, quoted from Insta Story.

On that occasion, Kalina Octaranny also denied profiting from the news of their fractured relationship. He even admitted to avoiding the news.

Leonardo DiCaprio revealed that he loved ‘Euphoria’

Back in 2019, Variety asked DiCaprio about the TV shows he was watching at the time. “I just saw Euphoria, which is amazing,” the Oscar-winner declared. “That show is amazing.” Naturally, the cast was thrilled to have the praise of one of the biggest names in Hollywood. Zendaya even retweeted his response on her Twitter page. Furthermore, Sweeney revealed that the cast was quietly freaking out about DiCaprio’s remark amongst themselves.

RADIO – The dominance of the hit “Easy On Me” on domestic air lasts six weeks. It must be added that the Czech Republic is far from the only country where Adele has been at the top for some time now. In the American singles chart, with this bitter ballad from the album “30”, she is currently in the ninth week in the lead. She only needs one triumph to balance the balance of her most successful song “Hello”, which won ten times in 2015-2016. The songs in second and third place have been winning from the radio for many months, both of which were released in the first half of last year. Silver Ed Sheeran scores with “Bad Habits” for twenty-seven weeks, bronze Deer with “Another Night” even thirty-eight laps. While the British singer has another single “Shivers” in the top ten, he is currently the eighth most played, Czech folk-rock and now pop group, with the release of another piece from the album “Things and Dreams”. Kryštof takes fourth place thanks to “I’m sinking into the sky” and Elton John and Dua Lipa with “Cold Heart” newly entered the top five, more precisely with a remix of this single from the Australian trio PNAU. Coldplay appear twice in the top ten, the collaboration with BTS “My Universe” on the ninth places a multiple hit from the top ten. number one “Higher Power”. The modest sixth line begins with the Puerto Rican singer Farruko with the song “Pepas”, which, in addition to Spanish-speaking countries, has already succeeded in the USA. ALBA – The offer of new albums is traditionally sober after the Christmas sales harvest in January. Therefore, many were surprised that the fifth studio album “Dawn FM” was sent to the world by the stellar The Weeknd at this very dead time. However, he also failed to thwart Viktor Sheen’s winning streak and begins in the Czech rankings only on two. Recall that with the last series “After Hours” in March 2020, the Canadian singer won and last summer he remained in the top ten. He also missed the number one novelty in the USA, where he was narrowly defeated by rapper Gunn, but in Britain, the 31-year-old musician triumphed convincingly. Sheen leads with the current record “Stories and Dreams” for the seventh time in a row and in the top six are three of his titles – the fifth is “Black and White World”, released in 2019, the sixth “Colors” from 2020. He remained on the podium also Smack, whose “Chimera Pt. 3: Snake” lost one place to a three. The order is again convincingly dominated by representatives of the domestic rap scene – namely, the top ten are also Hard Rico, Nik Tendo or Slovak Pil C. It cannot be assumed that anything will change in this distribution of forces in the next few weeks. Foreign pop in the leading places next to The Weeknd is represented only by Adele, who moved from nine to seven with the record “30”. The tenth place was taken by the only American rapper in the top ten – Lil Nas X thanks to the album “Montero”.

Top 10 – white:

  1. ▬ Viktor Sheen – Stories and dreams

  3. ▼ Smack – Chimera Pt. 3: Snake
  4. ▼ Hard Rico – Devil’s Son

  6. ▬ Viktor Sheen – Colors
  7. ▲ Adele – 30
  8. ▼ Nik Tendo – I’m fine, I’m fucked.
  9. ▼ Pil C – Conviction to success
  10. ▬ Lil Nas X – Montero

TORONTO – Telefilm Canada looks set to face the wrath of young Ontario filmmakers for rewarding box office success at its annual general meeting in Toronto on Thursday.

As the federal government’s film financier pushes ahead with plans to encourage more homegrown films to succeed at the local multiplex, Producers Roundtable Ontario, a group of film, TV and digital media producers, fears emerging film talent are getting the cold shoulder.

At the AGM in Toronto, Wyeth Clarkson, producer and PRO spokesman, will urge Telefilm Canada to roll back plans to give indie producers more autonomy in how they choose and finance projects for commercial success.

STORY: Telefilm Canada Launches $5 Million Private Film Fund

“The success of Ontario’s, and Canada’s, film industry has always been based on the visions, innovations and talents of our up and coming talent, people who are just getting into the business,” Clarkson said ahead of the AGM.

“We’re afraid Telefilm’s proposed funding-criteria changes will cut people out before they get a start, and the long-term impact this will have on the business,” he added.

The protest by cash-strapped producers is the latest sign many are struggling as they are weaned off of public subsidies and told to fill out budgets by snagging private production coin in the U.S. and elsewhere.

That international push by Canadian filmmakers includes participating in more official movie co-productions, many of which include Hollywood actors, to boost their box office appeal.

Telefilm Canada execs are expected Thursday at their AGM to trumpet their new “success index” that has seen increasing number of Canadian films like Starbuck, Fires and the hockey drama Goon faring well at the box office.

The new industry yardstick considers film festival trophies and international sales as it measures how homegrown movies perform in the face of stiff competition from popular Hollywood movies at the local multiplex.

That strategy has made Canadian flag-carriers like Jay Baruchel, David Cronenberg and Denis Villeneuve more bookable for film distributors abroad, and so potentially more successful at the theatrical box office back home.

Ahead of Thursday’s AGM, Telefilm Canada said its success index, while rewarding box office, still backs emerging talent.

The funding agency, which pours around $100 million annually into homegrown movie production, said there’s coin for micro-budget movies and young filmmakers that leverage digital technology.

And Telefilm Canada is staging talent labs at major film festivals, including Toronto, to support the country’s next generation of film producers, as well as offering development incentives to encourage established producers to work with emerging talent.

As the biggest film financier in Canada, how Telefilm Canada titles fare at home and overseas, in theaters and beyond, is seen as a key indicator of the commercial and cultural health of the domestic film industry.

The introduction of the success index and other commercial incentives remains a challenge for local film producers who continue to rely on government largesse to pursue projects.

The irony is Wyeth Clarkson is panning a policy to reward commercial success that was encouraged when his father, Wayne Clarkson, was head of Telefilm Canada.

The film financier first introduced so-called “performance envelopes” under Wayne Clarkson’s predecessor, Richard Stursberg, in 2002.

During Wayne Clarkson’s reign from 2005 to 2010, bureaucrats increasingly stopped short of just reading and evaluating scripts to decide which to finance as films, and instead rewarded successful film producers with an envelope of money to spend on their next projects.

Now Wyeth Clarkson is urging Telefilm Canada to be more transparent as it rolls out its latest film funding changes.

“Telefilm’s proposed system is very specific about allocation by language and region. But they’re not revealing how they plan to share money among the diverse group of players within those fields,” he urged.
