Previous research has shown that staying at least two meters apart from others can reduce the spread of COVID-19. Technology-based methods — such as strategies using WiFi and Bluetooth — hold promise to help detect and discourage lapses in social distancing. However, many such approaches require participation from individuals or existing infrastructure, so robots have emerged as a potential tool for addressing social distancing in crowds.

Now, Sathyamoorthy and colleagues have developed a novel way to use an autonomous mobile robot for this purpose. The robot can detect breaches and navigate to them using its own Red Green Blue — Depth (RGB-D) camera and 2-D LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) sensor, and can tap into an existing CCTV system, if available. Once it reaches the breach, the robot encourages people to move apart via text that appears on a mounted display.

The robot uses a novel system to sort people who have breached social distancing rules into different groups, prioritize them according to whether they are standing still or moving, and then navigate to them. This system employs a machine-learning method known as Deep Reinforcement Learning and Frozone, an algorithm previously developed by several of the same researchers to help robots navigate crowds.

The researchers tested their method by having volunteers act out social-distancing breach scenarios while standing still, walking, or moving erratically. Their robot was able to detect and address most of the breaches that occurred, and CCTV enhanced its performance.

The robot also uses a thermal camera that can detect people with potential fevers, aiding contact-tracing efforts, while also incorporating measures to ensure privacy protection and de-identification.

Further research is needed to validate and refine this method, such as by exploring how the presence of robots impacts people’s behavior in crowds.

The authors add: “A lot of healthcare workers and security personnel had to put their health at risk to serve the public during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our work’s core objective is to provide them with tools to safely and efficiently serve their communities.”

MALMÖ / STOCKHOLM. During Malmö FF’s gold celebration, Anders Christiansen got rid of his GPS.

Now it has been found: with the supporter Issa Zeid Baker, 26, who promises to return it – but has a claim.

– I would very much like to meet him (Christiansen). Because I get nothing from this, Baker tells Sportbladet.

– He can keep the vest as long as the GPS itself comes in, Christiansen says.

0-0 at home against Halmstad was enough. Malmö FF secured all-Swedish gold in the final round and wild celebration broke out on Malmö Stadium’s lawn.

In the middle of the gold celebration, Anders Christiansen got rid of his GPS (which measures maximum speed, high-intensity runs, running patterns and so on), which the players wear during training and matches.

Malmö FF’s fitness coach Jamie Mackay called for the missing GPS on Twitter.

Now it has been found.

The GPS is still in Malmö. With Issa Zeid Baker, 26, who describes himself as a great supporter of MFF and he supports the team in “wet and dry”.

– Actually, it was not me who took it from him, but it was my friend. Then he and another guy started pulling it and then my friend – who is strong – took it.

– Then we met at the home of another friend and we sat and checked the media and then it says that Malmö FF wants the GPS back. And then he dies of laughter and says that it’s me who took it.

“It has been found then? Cruelly!”

Fitness coach Jamie Mackay starts laughing when Sportbladet conveys where the GPS is.

– It has been found then? Cruelly! It measures maximum speed, number of high-intensity runs, running pattern … Now he only played 20 minutes against HBK so we have been able to produce an average value, but good that it comes back !, he says.

The image on Anders Christiansen’s GPS.

Issa Zeid Baker herself has extended a hand – to a friend who is supposed to be familiar with Anders Christiansen – to return the GPS.

– I told Christiansen’s friend that we have his GPS and that my friend – in case it should work – wants a match shirt that is signed by AC. Then he said that he does not have one but that he should fix something. We have not received any information yet.

If you do not get a match shirt, do you keep the GPS then?

– No, I will not keep it. It feels wrong morally. But my friend would rather have a match shirt. I do not want anything, but do it just because it feels quite moral.

– I would rather have just wanted to meet him (Anders Christiansen) and talk to him. Kind of thank him for this season.

The wish: to meet AC and a tour of the Stadium

Do you want to send a question to Christiansen?

– Yes, that I really want to meet him. Because I get nothing from this, says Issa Zeid Baker and bursts out laughing.

– Get to talk to him and kind of get to experience the Stadium. I would very much like to talk to MFF and visit. It had meant a lot to me. I do not want a sweater. I do this because I love AC and morally it would feel wrong to have the GPS.

Anders Christiansen himself has followed the hunt for the missing GPS with a smile.

– It has become a big thing! First of all, I myself am not involved, it is Mark (Read) and Jamie (Mackay) who made the request, says the Dane.

We’ve found it.

– I heard a rumor that you found it, Malmö is small!

– The supporter may not be able to use it for that much – he can keep the vest as long as the GPS itself comes in.

THE AUTHORS AND CASTINGS NOTICE FOR THE NEXT EDITION

Preparation for the next edition of Zecchino d’Oro, number 65. The selection procedure, totally free, is open to all girls and boys between 3 and 10 years old. The goal is not to find extraordinary vocals or small talents, but the most suitable performers for the songs in the competition.

In fact, until January 31, 2022, the call for authors to search for the next songs is open. The call is open to everyone, lyricists and musicians who have a children’s song in their drawer to propose.
There are many Italian songwriters who throughout the history of Zecchino d’Oro they proposed songs that later became great hits. We remember, over the years, artists like Lucio Dalla, Fabio Concato, Frankie hi-nrg mc, Simone Cristicchi.

The search for young performers has also already begun: pre-registrations are open until December 20 to participate in the casting of the 65th edition.
As in the last two years, the castings will return to online mode: children can participate simply by uploading an audition video and a short presentation video to a dedicated platform.

In the field of wages, it is an important agreement, and almost unexpected, that the European ministers of social affairs concluded on Monday 6 December. It should ultimately affect 25 million workers, according to the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI). However, it will not be a question of forcing the States which do not have one to create a minimum wage and, for the others, there will not be, contrary to what some detractors claim, a minimum threshold. uniform for this one. The European Union (EU) does not have the power to impose standards on the remuneration of workers.

The ministers however innovated by adopting a common position concerning new rules which should, in time – within two years? -, improve the lowest wages in Europe and, consequently, help to fight both social dumping and the phenomenon of “poor workers”, which currently affects 10% of those who have a job.

The agreement concluded will allow the opening of a trilogue between the States (the Council), the European Commission (which tabled its proposal for a directive in October 2020) and the European Parliament (which approved, at the end of November, its mandate negotiation).

Only the broad outlines of the consensus reached are known, but, obviously, the position of the States is behind that of the other two institutions, even if the proclamation is identical: “We must prevent people who invest fully in their work living in poverty”, declared on Monday the Slovenian Minister of Labor, Janez Cigler Kralj, whose country assumes the rotating president of the Union.

Do not infringe on national prerogatives

According to Nicolas Schmit, European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Integration, the aim is to demonstrate that “Europe cannot be the continent where people cannot live on their wages”. “And the EU could not be any longer on the sidelines of a debate that even the United States launched under the Biden presidency,” insists Sylvie Brunet, Modem MEP.

If the discussion has hitherto been centered on the principle of the “framework relating to minimum standards”, mentioned in the Commission proposal, it will now be necessary to move forward on the definition of “adequate levels” of minimum wages. Without encroaching on national prerogatives. Shortly after Monday’s agreement, the employers’ association BusinessEurope hastened to publish a press release insisting on the absence of obligations made to States and the necessary “Flexibility” which they should have in order to define what constitutes an adequate salary. No question either, in the proposal of the Council – which does not follow the Commission – to create individual rights for the workers, welcomes the employers.

Do everything to make up for the delay taken by Europeans vis-à-vis the American SpaceX in space, whether it is reusable rockets or satellite constellations. On Monday, December 6, the Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, announced that ArianeGroup was going to develop a reusable mini-launcher. This rocket “Must be operational in 2026”, said the Minister of the Economy by presenting the project called Maïa Space. It thus concretizes the commitments made by Emmanuel Macron during the presentation in October of his France 2030 program where 1.5 billion euros will be devoted to space.

The future launcher will be able to carry satellites weighing between 500 kilos and one ton to place them between 200 and 2000 kilometers from Earth, low orbit having become one of the privileged places for telecommunications or observation satellites, without talk about the constellations intended to provide high speed internet. The rocket will be manufactured in Vernon, in the Eure region, which will create around 100 additional jobs and largely offset the transfer to Germany of the Vinci engine integration activity.

This is an ambitious bet, since Maïa will have to be achieved in less than four years. Admittedly, the Prometheus engine that will equip it is already well advanced, as is the recoverable Themis stage, but the schedule is very tight. The stakes are high against Elon Musk, who dominates and sets the tone in the space market with his reusable Falcon 9 rocket and his constellation of Starlink satellites.

“Catching up on a bad strategic choice”

“We are going to make up for a bad strategic choice made ten years ago so that France and Europe finally have a reusable launcher”, said Bruno Le Maire, adding that he was “Convinced that this approach is complementary to Ariane 6”. A way of remembering that the dispute between France and Germany, the two main contributors to this project (56% for Paris and 22% for Berlin), which erupted this year was definitely over.

“We put a stop to what Europe was in the process of engaging in: division, rivalry and, basically, the weakening of all European space players, in order to unite our forces, make a division of labor and skills that will be more efficient, said the Minister of the Economy. This puts us in working order to be able to compete with [les acteurs] American and soon Chinese. “ Each partner country will prefer the future European rocket for its so-called institutional launches (military, scientific) to American launchers. The first flight of the Ariane 5 successor is scheduled for 2022.

Mutations change the shape of the COVID-19 spike protein, preventing antibody recognition and enabling the virus to escape vaccine-induced immunity; however, the extent to which vaccine recipients are immune from the Delta variant is unknown. To quantify the capacity of different variants (Alpha, Beta and Delta) to evade protective immune response in vaccines, researchers analyzed serum samples collected from healthy people who had received either the Pfizer or Astra Zeneca vaccine. 156 people had received two doses and 50 people had received one dose. They exposed SARS-CoV-2 proteins in a virus model system to sera from vaccinated people and observed the antibody response, measuring how effectively antibodies prevented each variant from infecting cells (virus neutralization).

The researchers found that vaccines conferred protection from all COVID-19 variants but noted reduced antibody neutralization of both the Beta and Delta variants. Across all vaccinated individuals, the Delta variant reduced the immune response in recipients of both the Pfizer and Astra Zeneca vaccine 4.31 and 5.11-fold respectively. The study was not designed to measure vaccine efficacy directly, although it was in keeping with recent findings from Public Health England of slightly lower vaccine effectiveness against the Delta variant than previous variants. It also did not report on serological study of people who received the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccines.

According to the authors, “While vaccines remain highly effective at preventing severe infection and death, ongoing monitoring of neutralization against new variants alongside studies of vaccine effectiveness are indicated as the virus continues to evolve over time, especially in vulnerable groups. Booster vaccines reduce the chance of being infected with currently circulating new variants. Newer updated vaccine designs are also likely to be required in time to prevent productive infection with newer variants of the virus.”

The sentence is reduced, but the military’s objective remains unchanged. Hours after the verdict sentencing Aung San Suu Kyi to four years in prison, junta leader General Min Aung Hlaing publicly announced a partial amnesty, reducing the sentence to two years. The former Burmese leader, 76, detained in an unknown location since the coup d’état of 1is February, was accused of inciting public unrest and violating health rules related to Covid-19.

This gesture, obviously calculated, also concerns former President Win Myint, who had been sentenced to the same sentence. “It was an attempt to be magnanimous, it fell flat”, notes Richard Horsey, analyst for the International Crisis Group, quoted by Agence France-Presse. The reduction of sentence does not change anything in substance, since Aung San Suu Kyi remains prevented from campaigning for the next elections, announced by the junta from August 2023. In addition, the former Burmese leader faces to other charges, for acts which could earn him up to a hundred years in prison in total. The next verdict is expected on December 14.

“China has the cards in hand”

Paradoxically, the verdict of the court in Naypyidaw, the Burmese capital, helped to partially restore the aura of the Nobel Peace Prize winner, widely tarnished abroad for her lack of compassion towards Rohingya Muslims, victims of atrocities from the Burmese army. The head of American diplomacy, Antony Blinken, denounced a conviction “Unfair”, believing that his sentence was “An affront to democracy and justice in Burma”. Michelle Bachelet, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, for her part criticized “A rigged trial with a secret procedure before a court controlled by the military” and a verdict that “Close a door to political dialogue”. “Aung San Suu Kyi has dedicated her life to fighting for freedom and democracy in Burma and has held this difficult role for over thirty years”, added the Norwegian Nobel Committee, ” worry ” for the one who was its winner in 1991.

To not miss anything on African news, subscribe to the newsletter of World Africa from this link. Every Saturday at 6 am, find a week of current events and debates treated by the editorial staff of “Monde Afrique”.

The “library” (detail), by the Zimbabwean artist Kudzanai Chiurai, visible at the “Ubuntu, a lucid dream” exhibition, which is being held at the Palais de Tokyo, in Paris, until February 20, 2022.

When curator Marie Ann Yemsi began to think about her exhibition “Ubuntu, a lucid dream”, which is being held at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Kudzanai Chiurai’s name was high on her list. Because the young Zimbabwean artist “Is in the daring and complexity”, she specifies. Because he also knows how to dig into the folds of history to bring out forgotten stories and “counter-memories”.

Born in 1981, a year after his country’s independence, into a highly politicized family, Kudzanai Chiurai made history and colonial struggles the raw material of a work that is presented in paintings, photos and images. experimental films. Starting from the observation that the continent’s archives are neglected and difficult to access, for five years he began to hunt for the modest relics of resistance to the British occupier.

In a few years, he established The Library Of Things We Forgot To Remember (“The library of things we forgot to remember”), made up of leaflets, fanzines, posters of the independence struggles, as well as Chimurenga vinyl albums, those songs that accompanied the fight for independence of Zimbabwe, in the 1970s. To this group, he added works of African artists whose work resonates with these fighting memories.

From this collection, Kudzanai Chiurai has made an evolving and itinerant project, a ” free zone “ in his words, entrusted at each stopover to one “Librarian”. To explain its vocation, Khanya Mashabela, responsible for the Parisian stage which takes place over 200 m2 at the Palais de Tokyo, readily quotes the philosopher Jacques Derrida: “Effective democratization is always measured by this essential criterion: participation in and access to the archive, its constitution and its interpretation. “

“Around questions of race and history”

“Most Zrní fans are unlikely to visit Ankali and vice versa,” says Isama Zing when I ask him about tribalism in society, which is one of the main themes of this year’s album “Blurry AF”. The following interview is about the crowd of guests and his approach to electronic music and Romani ballads.

Musicians often choose multiple pseudonyms to distinguish their creative faces. That’s what you have too – Pjoni is more electroacoustic, more improvised and conceptual, Isama Zing is more club-like and largely built on beats and rhythms. What was the primary motive that Pjoni did to you already was not enough?

I felt that Pjoni already carried too many connotations with me, I wanted to release music under a name that would have no context. The original plan was to split it: under the new pseudonym Isama Zing to release more club music, Pjoni was supposed to remain more experimental and improvisational, but I had already abandoned this division. I’m slowly getting to the point where I’d rather reconnect those identities. (laughter)

In one interview, you said that when creating electronic music “you just have to be careful that life stays there”. What are you doing to make it happen of life in your compositions did you achieve?

When a person creates music, especially on a computer, in one program, that program determines the way he creates on a subconscious level. The architecture of the software naturally tempts to store sounds on a grid, use pure straight tones and designed sounds from sound banks. I try to realize what limitations or guidelines the software gives me, and I’m going against them. There are many ways to get rid of it and create completely organic and living electronics. For example, instead of synths, I often use acoustic sources of sound, which I then morph in various ways, into new textural, even hyperrealistic forms. On the last album, I also work a lot with recorded sounds, instruments and singers, so avoiding sterility was a little easier.

To your current recording: the press release states that “More than anything else, ‘Blurry AF’ is primarily a mediator set in the direction of tribalism that we can see in various music scenes and subcultures.”. What did you mean by that?

That sentence then continues and expands it into a society-wide context. But yes, I think there is a kind of genre segregation in music as well. For example, most Grain fans are unlikely to visit Ankali and vice versa. There is this dimension in the electronic scene itself, either because they call others too commercial and the others too underground, or they are not open to other music in purely genre terms. One of the reasons the album is called “Blurry AF” is the intention to break these boundaries and seamlessly intersect. Whether this has succeeded must be judged by the listeners.

Someone has collaborated with you on every song in the album. Was it an intention from the beginning, or did this concept only emerge over time?

From the beginning, I wanted it to be a collaborative album, I wanted to be inspired by the thinking of other musicians and create perhaps a richer, more varied work. Specific collaborations arose during the creation of the album. Each track has asked itself who it wants to work with, and I’m enormously grateful to everyone who came with me.

The list of those collaborators is more than varied. How did you choose them?

Depending on who I’m close to musically and personally, and as I indicated in the previous answer – each track has chosen who it wants to work with.

Who was the hardest to persuade, if you persuaded?

Fortunately, I didn’t have to talk to anyone.

And which of those collaborations is the most valuable to you, which do you value the most?

They are all very valuable to me, I appreciate the time and energy that these people have selflessly put into it. It is a pleasure to have such talented and cordial friends.

Include Zing

Music producer, composer and sound engineer Jonatan Pastirčák performs on the music scene as Pjoni or Isama Zing. He studied music production at the UAE Institute in London, but has been involved in music since childhood (his first band was called Tucan and he founded it when he was about ten years old). He became more famous as part of the duo Ink Midget & Pjoni, with which he won the Radio Head Award. He has collaborated with Katarzia, produced albums by Zrní or Zvíře named Podzim, and has soundtracks to films (“In the Net”, “Lines”, “Dirt” and others) as well as theatrical performances (such as “Antigona” with the aforementioned Katarzia). Under the pseudonym Isama Zing, he released his debut eponymous EP in 2017, which he followed up this November with the album “Blurry AF”.

The tracklist also includes two Romani ballads sung by Irena Pokutová and Béla Pokuta. What fascinates you about Romani music?

On Romani folk songs (especially ballads) I am fascinated by the deep raw emotion that is going to tear your heart apart. It has fascinated me for a very long time. It is something extremely rare and unfortunately it is probably based on the authentic pain and hard life that these particular singers live. It is definitely not something that can be generalized to Roma music as such, it concerns specific people / musicians. I am very grateful to Jane Belišová, who collects these songs and forms a rich archive, without which they would gradually fall into oblivion.

Are you counting on some guests for a possible live release of the record?

I would like at least one or two concerts with the singers from the album to succeed.

You travel between Prague and Bratislava. How has the coronavirus affected your life? As a musician, how do you perceive anti-epidemic measures and assistance to artists in the Czech Republic in comparison with measures and assistance in Slovakia?

It was very strange, especially at the beginning, when a strict lockdown took place, it was suddenly impossible to travel to Prague. Something I was used to as a matter of course was suddenly not possible and we had no idea how long it would take. The first months of the pandemic really dropped my robots and I had more time off, which I have to admit selfishly, I also had a pretty good time. I was lucky that I still had a robot, but a lot of people lost all their income and they were very bad at it. Since I did not ask for help myself, I cannot judge how sufficient it was. But I definitely know she was extremely slow and ill-conceived. I am not familiar with Czech pandemic aid enough to be able to compare. I am glad that a kind of mutual solidarity and cooperation between musicians across genres has emerged in Slovakia, thanks to which they have been able to communicate clearly with the government and correct measures together.

We know what Isama Zing did. What is Pjoni doing now?

He is working on several soundtracks for movies and theaters and then maybe there will be some time to work on a new album.

They are all very valuable to me, I appreciate the time and energy that these people have selflessly put into it. It is a pleasure to have such talented and cordial friends.

We would like to say thanks to the writer of this short article for this remarkable web content
