“In all likelihood we are reaching the peak”, warns Olivier Véran, Saturday 11 December, in an interview with Parisian. The Minister of Health recalls that this fifth epidemic wave is violent: “We exceeded 70,000 diagnoses in 24 hours at the start of the week, unheard of since the start of the pandemic in our country.”

“For ten days, we have seen the beginning of a slowing down of the epidemic wave”, adds the Minister. We must now wait to know if the contaminations will drop quickly or if the plateau will remain high. “We are not heading towards containment. But to say that it will never happen again is impossible”, warned Olivier Véran.

“Further restrictions are not on the agenda, but let’s remain cautious and keep pushing forward.”

At Oslo City Hall, the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, which took place on Friday 10 December, provided an opportunity to take stock of the state of freedom to inform in the world. “Journalism in Russia is going through a dark period”, regretted the editor-in-chief of Novaïa Gazeta Dmitri Mouratov, co-winner of the award.

Known for its investigations into corruption and human rights abuses in Chechnya, its media outlet has seen six of its collaborators killed since the 1990s, including famous journalist Anna Politkovskaya, who was murdered in 2006. “I want journalists to die old”, he declared, before observing a moment of silence for the reporters killed in the exercise of their profession.

In addition to the assassinations of their colleagues, around 100 journalists, media, human rights defenders and NGOs were prevented from working after being classified as “Foreign agents” by the Russian Ministry of Justice.

An infamous statute, supposed to target those who receive a “Foreign funding” and lead a “Political activity”, which Mr Muratov will probably escape – even though Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that the prize was not a “Shield”. “I think that during the thirty years of existence of our newspaper, we have done so many positive things for the country that to declare ourselves ‘foreign agents’ would be harmful for the power of our country” and “Would be something stupid”, said the editor of Novaïa Gazeta at Agence France-Presse.

Social media criticism

Her co-winner, Filipino journalist Maria Ressa, has launched a virulent attack on American tech giants, which she says are guilty of letting greed spill out “Toxic sludge” on social networks.

Co-founder of the Rappler news site, the journalist attacked “American Internet companies” like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, without naming them explicitly. “These American companies (…) are angry with the facts, angry with the journalists. By nature, they divide us and radicalize us ”, she explained, specifying that their technology “Allowed the virus of lies to infect each of us, pitting us against each other, bringing out our fears, anger and hatred, and paving the way for the rise of authoritarian rulers and dictators”.

At the helm of Rappler, a very critical site of the Philippine President, Rodrigo Duterte, Mme Ressa is the subject of seven legal proceedings in her country which she believes could earn her a total of around 100 years in prison. Convicted of defamation last year but on parole, she was forced to ask four courts for permission to seek her Nobel.

At 1is December, at least 1,636 journalists had been killed on the planet in twenty years, according to a report by Reporters Without Borders, including 46 since the beginning of the year. Moreover, with 293 reporters behind bars, the number of journalists imprisoned in the world has never been so high, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

“Reporting information to the public can in itself prevent war”, summarized the president of the Norwegian Nobel committee, Berit Reiss-Andersen: “The role of the press is to lift the veil on aggression and abuse of power, and thus to contribute to peace. “

The Oslo ceremony also saw the head of the World Food Program, David Beasley, deliver the Nobel acceptance speech awarded last year to the UN humanitarian agency. In 2020, the festivities were canceled due to the pandemic.

JUSTICE – Former Olympic champion swimmer Yannick Agnel was indicted for “rape and sexual assault on a 15-year-old minor” and placed under judicial control, the Mulhouse prosecutor’s office told AFP on Saturday. The requests for provisional detention made by the prosecution and the investigating judge were not followed by the judge of freedoms and detention, said the prosecutor of the Republic of Mulhouse, Edwige Roux-Morizot.

The 29-year-old former athlete, converted into e-sport and a consultant in various media, was arrested Thursday at his Paris home and taken to the Mulhouse police station. His police custody ended at noon on Saturday.

The prosecutor of the Republic of Mulhouse had specified to AFP that a complaint had been lodged last summer for facts going back “approximately to 2016”.

According to L’Equipe, “the investigation follows a complaint from a swimmer who trained with Agnel in Mulhouse between 2014 and 2016”. “Several swimmers or former swimmers have been auditioned in recent weeks,” added the sports daily.

Double Olympic champion in 2012, Yannick Agnel then tried an experience in the United States, before returning to France and obtaining a license at Mulhouse Olympic Swimming (MON) in September 2014. He trained there for two years under the leadership of Lionel Horter, until the Olympics-2016.

Yannick Agnel has one of the finest records in French swimming: he was double Olympic champion in London in 2012 in the 200m freestyle and the 4x100m relay, before being crowned world champion in these two disciplines in 2013. However, at the Rio Olympics in 2016, he was eliminated from the 200m freestyle heats and announced his retirement from the sport in the process.

Sports Minister Roxana Maracineanu, herself passed through the Mulhouse club when she was a swimmer, told AFP to follow this affair closely: “It is an instruction which is ongoing and must follow its course, the The girl’s complaint is in the hands of justice and she must go to the end, ”she said on Saturday morning in Val d’Isère, where she follows the events of the Alpine Skiing World Cup.

“This is a very important subject for me at the national level, it is a fight that we carry at the European and international level (…) that the word can be released (…) it is essential so that other children don’t have to go through that anymore, ”she added. The minister remained close to her former coach, who still trains the swimmers at the high-level center in Mulhouse.

In another case, the Mulhouse Olympic Swimming is for its part indicted for “attempted fraud” for facts also dating back to 2016. The club was in dispute with several swimmers, including Yannick Agnel, who went to court for touch the 60,000 euros that MON owed him for his last year of contract.

The club was ordered to pay this sum to the swimmer, but appealed. The case is due for appeal in March 2022.

At the large roundabout of the expressway, at the entrance to Nouméa, the separatist activists deployed banners on which is inscribed: “On December 12, 2021, we are not voting”. Above flies the Kanak flag. A passive presence: they do not seek to challenge the drivers who use this strategic node. In the oppressive heat, there are about fifteen of them, taking refuge in the shade of the mango trees, can of cold beer in hand. A few tens of meters away, two trucks of mobile gendarmes and soldiers parked in the middle of the dungeon.

“They watch our banners and we watch over them”, jokes Dawera Dianou, suggesting that the visible presence of the police could stir up the reactions of young Kanaks in this popular district of the Valley of Tir. Dawera is the son of Alphonse Dianou, head of the commando which in 1988 organized the hostage-taking of Ouvéa, killed during the military assault. He had met Emmanuel Macron when the President of the Republic went to Ouvéa on May 5, 2018, as a sign of reconciliation. A moment of exchange, hidden from view, and intense emotion.

At present, he does not have enough harsh words towards the Head of State who “Reneged on the word of the state”. Like all components of the independence movement, this radical activist denounces “The stubbornness of the State to maintain at all costs the date of the consultation of December 12” while the health crisis hit the territory at the beginning of September, causing 280 deaths, more than half of them in the Kanak community, and a year of Kanak mourning was decreed by the Customary Senate for the period of September 2021 and September 2022 .

Only the loyalists are campaigning because the independentists have decided not to go to vote, respecting a period of mourning for their deaths from Covid-19. They called for non-participation in the referendum.

Strange campaign, where the supporters of independence refuse to take part in the third referendum on the accession to full sovereignty which they had requested the organization after the first two had given a majority to the no. They campaign, on social networks, but also by mobilizing their local structures, to call… not to vote. This sometimes raises some questions in their database: “We’ve been waiting for thirty years. What is this pirouette? I will vote yes ”, thus reacts an activist to the instructions of the Kanak and Socialist National Liberation Front (FLNKS).

“We no longer have anyone in front of us”

The independence leaders do not deny some tensions. “There are people who do not understand”, admits Johanito Wamytan, chief of staff of the Union calédonienne (UC) -FLNKS group in Congress. Tensions accentuated by the vaccination obligation which will be implemented in the territory from December 31. A decision adopted by the Congress of New Caledonia, with a pro-independence majority, and which triggered strong reactions. On Saturday December 4, several thousand people demonstrated in the streets of Noumea, most of them without a mask.
