Around 66 million years ago, the so-called Chicxulub meteorite crashed into the Earth, in what today is the Yucatán peninsula in Mexico, marking the demise of dinosaurs and end of the Cretaceous period. This mass extinction still puzzles scientists today, as it was one of the most selective in the history of life: all non-avian dinosaurs, pterosaurs, ammonites, and most marine reptiles disappeared, whilst mammals, birds, crocodiles, and turtles survived.
A team of scientists from the Vrije Universiteit, Uppsala University, and the ESRF have now shed light on the circumstances surrounding the diverse extinction across the different groups. The answers came from the bones of fishes that died moments after the meteorite struck.
When the meteorite impacted Earth, it rocked the continental plate and caused huge waves in water bodies, such as rivers and lakes. These moved enormous volumes of sediment that engulfed fish and buried them alive, while impact spherules (glass beads of Earth rock) rained down from the sky, less than an hour after impact. Today, the event deposit of Tanis in North Dakota (United States) preserves a fossilised ecosystem that includes paddlefishes and sturgeons, which were direct casualties of the event.
The fossil fishes were exceptionally preserved, with their bones showing almost no signs of geochemical alteration. Melanie During, researcher from Uppsala University and the VU Amsterdam and lead author of the publication, went onsite to excavate the precious specimens: “It was obvious to us that we needed to analyse these bones to get valuable information about the moment of the impact,” she explains.
The team came to the ESRF, a particle accelerator that produces the world’s brightest x-rays, with a partial fish specimen and representative sections of the bones and carried out high-resolution synchrotron X-ray tomography.
The ESRF is the perfect tool to research this kind of samples and the facility has developed unique expertise in palaeontology over the last two decades. “Thanks to the ESRF’s data, we found that the bones registered seasonal growth, very much like trees do, growing a new layer every year on the outside of the bone,” explains Sophie Sanchez of Uppsala University, and visiting scientist at the ESRF.
“The retrieved growth rings not only captured the life histories of the fishes but also recorded the latest Cretaceous seasonality and thus the season in which the catastrophic extinction occurred,” states senior author Jeroen van der Lubbe of the VU in Amsterdam.
The X-ray scans also showed the distribution, shapes, and sizes of the bone cells, which are known to fluctuate with the seasons as well. “In all studied fishes, bone cell density and volumes can be traced over multiple years and they indicate whether it was spring, summer, autumn, or winter. We saw that both cell density and volumes were on the rise but had not yet peaked during the year of death, which implies that growth abruptly stopped spring” says Dennis Voeten, researcher at Uppsala University.
In parallel to synchrotron radiation studies, the team carried out carbon isotope analysis to reveal the annual feeding pattern of a fish. The availability of zooplankton, its prey of choice, oscillated seasonally and peaked in summer. This temporary increase of ingested zooplankton enriched the skeleton of the fish with the heavier 13C carbon isotope relative to the lighter 12C carbon isotope. “The carbon isotope signal across the growth record of this unfortunate paddlefish confirms that the feeding season had not yet climaxed — death came in spring,” asserts During.
The findings will aid future research into the selectivity of the mass extinction: in the Northern Hemisphere, it was spring and therefore the reproduction cycles of organisms were starting, only to be abruptly stopped. Meanwhile, it was autumn in the Southern Hemisphere, where many organisms were likely preparing for winter. In general, it is well understood that organisms who were exposed died virtually immediately. So those sheltering in caves or burrows because they were hibernating were far more likely to survive into the Paleogene. “Our results will help to uncover why most of the dinosaurs died out while birds and early mammals managed to evade extinction,” concludes During.

Sommige ondernemers verwachten een omzetdaling. “De omzet zal wel dalen nu de horeca weer open gaat. Dat is niet meer dan logisch en het is de horeca ook van harte gegund,” zegt bijvoorbeeld een Albert Heijn-ondernemer. Ook het online bestellen, dat tijdens de pandemie door veel consumenten ontdekt is, gaat mogelijk voor een omzetdaling van de supermarkten zorgen. Net als de opkomst van de flitsbezorgers.
“De 20 procent omzetstijging zal wel teniet worden gedaan,” verwacht een Plus-ondernemer. “Het zal een hele kluif worden om op het reguliere omzetniveau van 2019 te komen en de jaarlijkse inflatie- en loonkostenstijgingen te betalen.” Het meest optimistisch zijn de Jumbo-ondernemers in het winkelierspanel. “Wij houden de forse stijging vast’, klinkt het zelfverzekerd. Consumenten hebben immers ontdekt dat zij ook zelf kunnen koken en dat, als ze daar geen zin of gelegenheid voor hebben, de supermarkt prima maaltijdoplossingen biedt. “We zakken wel in de omzetcijfers, maar niet tot het niveau van voor corona.”

Tijdens de coronapandemie profiteerden de supermarkten flink van het feit dat de horeca en veel niet-essentiële winkels lange tijd gesloten waren. Nu de meeste coronamaatregelen zijn versoepeld of op korte termijn zullen verdwijnen, peilde Distrifood bij zijn winkelierspanel hoe zij tegen de nabije toekomst aankijken (1.2). Zeker in combinatie met de snel stijgende inflatie zijn die vooruitzichten niet onverdeeld optimistisch.
Sommige ondernemers verwachten een omzetdaling. “De omzet zal wel dalen nu de horeca weer open gaat. Dat is niet meer dan logisch en het is de horeca ook van harte gegund,” zegt bijvoorbeeld een Albert Heijn-ondernemer. Ook het online bestellen, dat tijdens de pandemie door veel consumenten ontdekt is, gaat mogelijk voor een omzetdaling van de supermarkten zorgen. Net als de opkomst van de flitsbezorgers.
“De 20 procent omzetstijging zal wel teniet worden gedaan,” verwacht een Plus-ondernemer. “Het zal een hele kluif worden om op het reguliere omzetniveau van 2019 te komen en de jaarlijkse inflatie- en loonkostenstijgingen te betalen.” Het meest optimistisch zijn de Jumbo-ondernemers in het winkelierspanel. “Wij houden de forse stijging vast’, klinkt het zelfverzekerd. Consumenten hebben immers ontdekt dat zij ook zelf kunnen koken en dat, als ze daar geen zin of gelegenheid voor hebben, de supermarkt prima maaltijdoplossingen biedt. “We zakken wel in de omzetcijfers, maar niet tot het niveau van voor corona.”

From the opening choral notes of Lalo Schifrin’s compositions (which earned him an Oscar nomination), it’s clear that something wicked lies in the spacious Dutch colonial at 112 Ocean Avenue, once the DeFeo home before the Lutz family moves in. It’s a house with bad residue after Ronald DeFeo, Jr. slays his entire family with a rifle in the early hours of November 13, 1974. A year passes before George and Kathy Lutz (James Brolin and Margot Kidder) move into the house with their three young children; the clan lasts 28 days before fleeing with claims of a haunted house. The house retains that dark energy, and the movie knows it; each room that the Lutz parents tour with the realtor is interspersed with imagery of the DeFeo murders before the kids even move in. As the 118-minute runtime powers forward, George battles for domain supremacy, even shouting “This is my house!” to the malevolent spirits in the climax.
Director Stuart Rosenberg (“Cool Hand Luke”) worked with Sandor Stern’s screenplay, adapted from the 1977 Jay Anson book of the same name, with one notable addition: the book’s title purports the haunting as “A True Story.” Anyone who remembers the mania surrounding “The Blair Witch Project” upon its release can speak to the power of the “true story” claim, even if it is fake news.
The Lutz family’s highly-contested account of paranormal experiences — which include, as seen in the movie, stigmata on the priest who attempted to bless the residence — was widely believed upon the book’s publication and, one could argue, led to the casting of the film’s lead actor. In an interview with The AV Club, Brolin spoke about the other movie he was filming, how the role fell into his lap, and how his experience with Anson’s book led to him agreeing to do the “Amityville” project.

While shooting Robert Butler’s neo-noir action film “Night of the Juggler,” James Brolin heard about the upcoming production in vague terms; there’s no script yet. In “Now a Terrifying Motion Picture!,” film scholar James F. Broderick writes that it was “originally conceived as a made-for-TV movie” and that Anson did write a screenplay adapting his book, but the studio rejected it in favor of seasoned television writer Sandor Stern’s version. Brolin explains how the book was the whole pitch:
“But as I’m shooting ‘Night of the Juggler’ … somebody says, ‘There’s no script, but you ought to read this book, ‘The Amityville Horror,’ because they’ll have the script soon, and they really would like to have you do it.’ So I was reading this novel at night and it’s two in the morning. Well, I would hang my pants on the door of the bedroom, I’d throw them over the top corner of the main door coming into the bedroom, and all of a sudden the pants fell off the door onto the floor. How I didn’t hit my head on the ceiling, I have no idea, because I was at a scary part of this book, and it so surprised me that I started laughing after I recovered and said, ‘I’ve got to do this movie!’ And that’s how that happened.”

The fact that Brolin was so immersed in the story translates on the big screen. He has his work cut out for him, as the role of George Lutz is a cold, unfeeling one to begin with. But something happens with each accumulative bump in the night, while 112 Ocean Avenue works him over as easily as the Overlook consumes Jack Torrance in “The Shining.” The furrowed Dad brow gives way to a vacant brutality, and Brolin assumes the physicality of an increasingly agitated beast as George becomes more and more recessed into himself … which isn’t really himself at all. The broad Father-Knows-Best shoulders begin a proto-Jason Voorhees heave; the steady, deliberate movements become more snappy, reactive. Movies like “The Amityville Horror” and “The Shining” (both, it should be noted, feature an attempted axe murder by a father) act like possession movies in a time when it was mostly women’s bodies being invaded by the Devil in the movies. As Lutz, Brolin acts as a man untethered from himself until he and the plot work themselves into a fever pitch, making “The Amityville Horror” one of the great ’70s horror movies to withstand the test of time. Something that can’t quite be said for the movie’s sequels.

Selama ini, Wika selalu menutupi masalahnya dengan senyum ceria, termasuk kepada keluarganya. Dia tak ingin membuat sanak keluarga khawatir dan cemas akan kondisinya. Bahkan, pernah suatu saat dia merasa terancam karena mantan pacarnya yang berperilaku kasar. Meski merasa takut, Wika tetap memilih bungkam dan menghadapinya sendirian.
“Beberapa kali aku tuh ngerasa gue nih enggak aman, cuman gue enggak mungkin bisa ngasih tau orang tua gue, karena untuk mereka ngelepasin aku aja tuh udah satu hal yang berat banget bagi mereka,” ucap Wika Salim.
Meski demikian, Wika mengaku selalu menceritakan masalahnya kepada orang tua, tetapi tidak saat insiden itu terjadi. Dia akan menceritakan segala masalahnya setelah semua berlalu dan merasa aman. Bukan tanpa alasan, dia tak ingin menambah beban pikiran keluarganya. Terlebih, Wika Salim sendiri akan segera menginjak usia 30 tahun.
“Enggak mau nambahin beban mereka. Sedih aja kadang kayak, ih udah umur segini ya,” kata Wika.
Di samping itu, Wika juga merasa sedih dengan kondisinya saat ini. Dia sadar betul orang tuanya ingin Wika segera menikah di usianya yang hampir 30 tahun ini. Namun di sisi lain, Wika juga merasa trauma dengan kegagalan rumah tangganya. Dia pun akan lebih berhati-hati dalam memilih pasangan untuk kedepannya.
“Selama ini juga udah coba, tapi kan memang, ya dibandingkan gagal lagi mending sebelum jadi pernikahan kalau memang udah nggak aman ya jangan,” tutur Wika.
Wika Salim diketahui pernah menikah dengan seorang pria bernama Candra Permana. Sayang, biduk rumah tangga keduanya kandas setelah berjalan selama tiga tahun. Wika Salim akhirnya melayangkan gugatan cerai kepada Candra Permana pada 14 Maret 2018 di Pengadilan Agama Depok, Jawa Barat.

Dezesseis produtores de música eletrônica nacional se debruçaram sobre a faixa ecológica e existencial de Arnaldo, produzida originalmente por John Ulhoa (Pato Fú), e recriaram versões que vão do breakbeat ao techno. Não deixe de ouvir as pedradas de Tatá Ogan e Holocaos.
Régis Martins e & Cia Fantasma – Frequência Modulada

E já que falamos do fundador nos Mutantes, acaba de sair um disco que bebe desta fonte. Régis Martins, tdo Motormama, lançou novo e maravilhoso trabalho com seu projeto (paralelo?) Cia Fantasma. Poucos artistas brasileiros atingem o objetivo “indie” de se fazer uma música boa de ouvir, cativante e sem os recursos do pop fácil, característica que amamos em bandas como o Belle & Sebastian, por exemplo. Aliás, que trabalho de teclados! Ouve aí:

Alerta máximo de música boa
Parem as rotativas! Acaba de chegar aquele som que te faz parar o que está fazendo e pensar “eita”! Illusionize é de Goiânia e apresenta uma bass track de primeiríssima linha, acompanhada de um videoclipe pra lá de bacana. Me lembrou Disclosure, embora não saiba explicar em que sentido. O som tem cara de brasileiro, masnão se entrega fácil.
Duda Raupp, Nill e Cristal – O Plano é Não Voltar Pra Casa
Trio de Responsa
Duda Raupp lança single em colaboração com Cristal e meu conterrâneo Nill. Groove bom de pista e de rolê, assunto principal da música. A produção também é acima da média. Neo Soul, R&B e Hip Hop misturados. Sorte que eu moro pertinho!
DJ Memê – Estrelar
Tem que suar!
Memê, grande nome carioca da música de pista, acaba de lançar uma versão – ainda mais dançante – de Estrelar, de Marcos Valle, classicona das pistas dos anos 80 e um dos ícones do chamado brazilian boogie. A produção, como não poderia deixar de ser, é um diamante. Metais, aquele baixo funky primoroso e o esmero feito pelo responsável por músicas que animaram muita festa por aí. O single é um aperitivo do álbum Som Bacana, que sai logo logo.
Hate Moss – Eremita
Meia brasileira, meia italiana
O duo Hate Moss é formado pela italiana Tina e o brasileiro Ian, apresentam o clipe da excelente Eremita, parte do disco NaN (Not a Number), que deve estar disponível em maio. O som é um indie lo-fi bem bacana, onírico e eletrônico, provocador e paranoico. Recomendo fortemente.
Delnur – Mind-Brain-Body
Opa, eu ouvi “caipirinha” ?
É bem gostoso receber singles que misturam grooves de música eletrônica, funk e aquela pegada europeia de Phoenix e Luomo. Mind-Brain-Body é música de festa em casa, de festa fora de casa, tem elementos tortos e sintetizadores divertidos. Delnur é brasileiro e vive em Nova Iorque. Meteu uma caipirinha no meio da letra em inglês para que a gente não se esqueça disso.
Sound Bullet – Pienso En Tu Mirá
Bela reinvenção da música de Rosalía
Escolher uma boa música para fazer uma reinterpretação não é fácil. Meu velho amigo Carlos Primatti dizia que “uma banda se entrega no cover”. Eis aqui o pulo do gato: refazer uma música nem um pouco óbvia na hora de “se entregar”. Foi o que fez o Sound Bullet e ficou massa!

Jolie played the role of Lisa Rowe, a long-time patience of the hospital. Susanna and Lisa form a close bond and quickly become two peas in a pod. This does not last for long as their own personal demons get in the way. The scene wherein Susanna was mentally tortured by Lisa was a difficult one to fathom. Mental health issues are no walk in the park, and its victims need all the patience and attention. Jolie’s performance was chilling, memorable, and one of the reasons why the film has become a cult classic.
3. By the Sea
Jolie was also the writer and director of the romantic drama, where she starred alongside her then real-life partner, Brad Pitt (Inglourious Basterds). The film followed the tumultuous marriage of a writer named Roland, portrayed by Pitt and Vanessa, portrayed by Jolie, who was a former dancer. The two attempted to rebuild their broken relationship by taking a vacation in a small coastal town. The confrontation scene where Vanessa revealed to Roland that she was barren explained her self-sabotaging ways that were the reason behind their crumbling marriage. Vanessa grew jealous and insecure of other couples who had it better, and tried to ruin their happy marriages as well. Jolie was able to convey the emotions of a broken woman who just wanted nothing but a stable family life

The mystery crime drama is every mother’s worst nightmare. Jolie portrayed the role of Christine Collins, a mother whose son suddenly goes missing one day. She went on an endless search, chasing every possible lead even after encountering one dead end after another. A few months after, a boy claiming to be Christine’s son suddenly showed up at her doorstep. The scene where Christine tried to convince the police officer that the boy was not her real son was gut-wrenching, especially for a parent who has suffered an immense loss. She was desperate for answers, and was ready to give up everything just be reunited with her boy. The film showed the selflessness of a mother, as well as the bravery of Christine who did everything in her power to challenge the flawed system that gave little regard to women.

The dark fantasy adventure featured the back story of Maleficent, portrayed by Jolie, who is known for being the wicked fairy godmother in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. The film made us understand Maleficent more, and gave us a different perspective from the story we all grew up with. Maleficent was a fairy who lived in a castle in the forest kingdom. She had a pure heart and was a fierce protector of her surroundings. The scene where Maleficent lost her wings after the betrayal of Stefan, the future king and father of Aurora/Sleeping Beauty, changed the course of her life for good. The loss of her wings meant losing her absolute freedom. This had a crippling effect on Maleficent, and caused her to become bitter and vicious. Jolie was effective in her portrayal, which allowed us to see Maleficent in a different light.
